Comparative Stream II

Hematologic & Neoplastic Disease Across Species

VET 432B: Comparative Stream II

VET 432B examines hematologic disorders and neoplastic disease across diverse animal species. Students learn species-specific hematologic parameters, hemolytic anemias, coagulopathies, and leukemias. Neoplasia section covers lymphoma, mast cell tumors, and sarcomas in companion animals; hepatic carcinoma in avian species; and lymphosarcoma in cattle. The comparative approach reveals how species genetics, environmental exposures, and metabolic factors influence disease presentation and prognosis.

Focus Areas

  • Hematologic reference ranges: species differences in RBC, WBC, platelet counts
  • Hemolytic anemias: immune-mediated, infectious (babesia, mycoplasma)
  • Coagulopathies: DIC, vitamin K deficiency, inherited disorders
  • Hematologic malignancies: lymphoma, leukemia, myeloma
  • Common tumors by species: dogs (hemangiosarcoma), cats (lymphoma, mast cell), birds (hepatic carcinoma)
  • Staging, chemotherapy protocols, and palliative care considerations
