🔗 Key Similarities to the Medical Match
Rank Order Lists (ROLs)
The VIRMP follows the same principles as the NRMP. Applicants rank their preferred programs and programs rank their preferred candidates using Rank Order Lists.
The Algorithm
A computer algorithm attempts to match each applicant to the highest-ranked program on their list that is also willing to accept them — the same core logic used in the human medical match.
Binding Agreement
Matching is a binding commitment. If you match with a program, you are expected to accept that position.
Match Day
Just like in human medicine, there is a specific Match Day — typically in early March — when all participants find out where they will be spending the next year.
⚡ Notable Differences from the NRMP
Dual Matching
Unlike the medical match, the VIRMP runs separate matches for internships and residencies. If you apply for both, the residency match is processed first.
Couples Matching
The VIRMP does not currently offer a formal “couples match” like the NRMP. Partners must use individual strategies, such as ranking programs in the same geographic area highly, to stay together.
The “Scramble”
If you don’t match, a post-match “scramble” releases a list of unfilled positions and unmatched applicants, allowing for direct contact and placement.
Voluntary Participation
While most major academic programs use the VIRMP, some private practices and specific specialties (such as Ophthalmology) may hire outside of the match.
